Solitude: A Bitter Medicine For Life-long Sanity And Satisfaction

I have a lot to say on solitude.

You see, for two years i.e. from 2018–2020, I experimented with solitude. Spent weeks reading and sifting through research. Practiced everyday. By the time 2020 rolled in, I concluded in my head that any form of solitude — general aloneness, soliloquies while walking, finding time to sit idle — is invaluable beyond words. No, there’s no twist here. I mean every word.

I spend most of my day everyday alone in silence.

I live with a husband who works long hours and travels for work. I have an independent law practice plus I’m a professional writer. Except counseling clients over a phone call and visiting courts (rarely), it’s all me yapping inside my head.

On an average day, you will find me toiling over a legal draft or a story structure in complete silence. From 2016–2018, on most days, I’d take 60 minute walks while listening to instrumental music.

I was alone most of the day, every day.

After this 2-year lifestyle, I’ve found that solitude is the only practice that can keep you sane and satisfied in a sustainable way.
