A Daughter’s Perspective

My father is a retired colonel. He’s lived a tough life. He joined the army in 1971, and straightaway he was posted to China border (a place that has a named in digits, kinda like Elon Musk’s son). There, he was asked to chart a road connecting two rocky mountains. So, he did it.

He sat in a Jeep and went where no man had ever gone and charted that damn non-existent road.

In the 80s, Dad served in Amritsar and was an active part of the Blue Star Operation and its vast aftermath. Anyone who has lived in Punjab during the early 80s understands the collective psyche at the time. It was mayhem. During that time, my mom was pregnant with my brother (born in Jan 86).

Yes, there is a reason I’m telling you all this.

Later, my father served in Kashmir during peak militancy (1991–1993) and eventually, also got deployed during Kargil war. After that, he took a break and did some studying. But when he got back into service after the hiatus, Op Parakram was declared (2002).

Eventually, after some years of peace, he retired in 2008.

So, why this background? Because when I see my father, I see a different man altogether.
