The Only Thing I Wish I’d Been Taught As A Child
I’m still learning. Are you?
The one thing I wish my parents had discussed with me when I was a child is emotions. Why we have them and what to do with them.
I’ve suffered so much because I didn’t understand my emotions. In fact, I believe that basic psychology should be made an important subject in middle and high school in India.
Mental health is the biggest concern in the World today. We’re facing a Loneliness epidemic.
As per a 2020 survey, 43% Indians suffer from depression. A 2018 WHO survey ranked India as the most depressed country in the World, closely followed by USA and China. Today, one in 7 Indians faces a mental health issue, depression and anxiety being the most common.
You ask, what can be the repercussion of a population going about their day with mental health issues?
Let’s take an example.
A finds herself trapped in a loveless, oppressed marriage. She is not allowed to work and her husband does not allow her any financial or personal liberty. This is not so uncommon in middle class Indian families. A’s parents keep asking her ‘to adjust’. The more frustrated A feels, the more she slaps and beats her children. A is always frowning and controls her children with an iron grip.
